What is your favourite board game?
November 5, 2009 12:00 AM
I do not own a television. Nor do I feel especially nostalgic for any of the televisions I have owned in the past. Recently however I have become obsessed with trawling through second hand shops and looking at the old board games that they have.
Board games conjure up a number of happy memories from my childhood, and also a number of extremely fraught and bitter ones. My auntie is without question the most competitive person that I have ever met, to the extent that Trivial Pursuit is now banned from my parents' house after a particularly nasty argument one Christmas Day that saw me closer than I ever hope to come again to punching an aged relative.
As winter hits and evenings at home seem a lot more appealing it seems right to ask what other people's favourite board games are, be it for the enjoyment of the game itself or the memories that they evoke.

Does Pass the Pigs count as a board game? I used to love playing that - still remember that if the pigs landed wrong you were deemed to have thrown Making Bacon, and lost all your points. This was usually accompanied by a howl of anguish. Trivial Pursuit was another fave, but we only had my parents much loved 20 year old version. Most of the questions of which referred to things that had happened when I was a young child. And I don't know much about soap operas that only ever existed in the early 80s! Always made the game a challenge, if i could ever answer the entertainment question I would be on my way. Or I would spend hours landing on those evil pink squares, shrugging my shoulders and waiting for my chance to roll again. But isn't that what board games are all about?

I still love Monopoly. We used to play such epic games in college that we had to make more money out of napkins. And Scrabble, although it tends to make people a bit crazy.

I really enjoy Cluedo, although I take it a bit too seriously. The best way to win is to write down EVERYTHING anyone says and try to work out patterns. I'm sure most Cluedo players know this, but my family don't, therefore I am the Barrow champion.
