Great News - I have acquired Discovering Ipswich

Paul Gilberg

Hello All at Shire
Yes thanks to Chris Luddington at Hay I have acquired a book I never thought I would get namely a first edition Discovering Ipswich (No 3) in that series.Only 500 ever issued and many must have been long destroyed. I thought Ipswich would be my last Discovering title that I need but Chris did not have two of the titles - Horse Drawn Caravans (258) and Wines of Madeira (36). Chris tells me the Wines of Madeira will be tough and I do have a question for Shire. According to the 30 years book, there were 15,000 copies of this book. Is that a misprint and should it be 1500. I don't think there is any available on ABE or Amazon so must be rare and of course if Chris has not got it, that is a sign of its rarity. Best wishes to everyone. Paul Gilberg

Paul, I asked around about the Wines of Madeira book and uncovered an interesting little story. Apparently, 15,000 copies were produced. However, due to an error by the printer, the book suffered from poor binding, and thousands of copies ended up being destroyed. Many did make it out onto the market, but have probably continued to suffer from poor binding. Thus, intact copies of this book probably are extremely rare. Good luck on your quest!
